Torn: To sew or To buy

Sewers/Sewists/Apparel artists:
How do you decided when you should 'buy' and when you should 'sew' something you see in a shop?

This question has plagued me for sometime. I look at clothing thinking I could make that, but I haven't always got the time, then I go to buy it, or even do buy it and then I'm left feeling guilty knowing I could have made it. It's a vicious circle!!

So how do you decide?

These are just two things I'm currently racking my brain over whether I should buy or make?!

The only thing that is swaying me with these two items is that I know I won't be able to find lime green material to make the first one, I did see both these jackets in person, and that Green in much nicer in real life than on the picture!

So come on fess up, how do you decided when to buy and when to make?

  1. Usually I just do a quick cost:time:skill analysis.

For the first one, I would definitely buy - £45 isn't too unreasonable for what would probably be a trendy fun item (you're not likely to wear it daily!). Finding the fabric would be difficult, and I believe making a semi-fitted blazer is pretty time consuming (and, personally, beyond my skill level)

The second one I would seriously consider making! The materiel would be more widely available, the price is pushing the limits of my fantasy adult budget (haha) and the construction, while eye-catching, looks simple enough. I'm not sure I would actually succeed, but I'd be more likely to try.

I'm more of a dreamer than a do-er, but I try to be realistic in my dreams. I try to find examples of clothes that look very exciting, but are actually very basic shapes, just with some clever details. I keep a Pinterest board of things mostly fit these criteria, if you want to take a look!

    1. I think your right, and £45 isn't a bad price! I'll certainly have a look at your board- I'm always after inspiration :)

  2. Haha! I am not a sewist but I am at the point where I keep thinking "Oh! I can learn to sew, this looks fun" but I don't even start… Or even just thinking that I should learn how to alter my clothes…

Lately I think I am leaning towards more towards "basic" looks in my closet with a few eye popping pieces that I know I'll wear a lot. I recently cleaned out my closet of all the things that I don't wear/honestly would probably not even wear anymore and there was actually a lot!
